Social Media

Do I love instagram? I'm not sure. It's the only social media I use often. I have Facebook but never really post on it. I used to, in university I loved it, a night out wasn't a night out until your photos were up on Facebook but as soon as I left it became a place to post a few holiday snaps and then after a while not even that.

I signed up to instagram years ago as a personal account and then set up an art focused account to share my portfolio and bits that I like working on etc. Recently I've taken part in some 'challenges', 30 day type things - draw this, or draw that in my style or tell us about yourself. The problem I found, quite honestly, is that I would put up something I really liked, I thought 'hey now Eli, this is a great picture!' but then would check back and see if anyone had 'liked' it. If it had 2 or 3 likes or non, I would compare it to a picture that got 20 and think more negatively about that artwork. Madness.

Or I would start to think about the time of day I posted the picture, or what hashtags I would use. And the mad thing is - I'm hoping that people who like and follow my page will visit my online shop and buy my stuff which is probably actually quite rare. A like and a follow is one thing, spending your hard earned cash is another. I think of all the artists I follow and then how many I follow through to purchase. I can think of 2. In about 180. And they were small purchases.

So what do I do now? I've assessed the feelings I'm having over social media, I realise I spend too much time watching other people's artwork and comparing it to my own or watching the like counter, or the follow counter (which is even worse, I can lose 10 followers in one post!) so what do I do? Come off the platform? Use a different one? Try to care less? Revert to only posting on this blog? Focus only on my website and shop?

I don't know.

I've had a 2 week break from posting (or doing) any artwork anyway as I've had a wisdom tooth out and have another one out tomorrow so I guess I have more time to think around the issue...

On another note, it has been an absolute age since I posted on the blog, gosh I feel like I've done loads! Please take a look at my portfolio for recent artwork, my baby is big, nearly a year old now! I'm working hard on my garden, in year two now of homeownership and learning how to have a working kitchen garden. Last year most of my veggies failed so I learned some lessons and this year I hope to have much more produce! The key, I think, is to attract the bees and ladybirds!

Anywho, I'll post some artwork soon, I hope you've stuck around since November (sorry) and hopefully you'll check in again soon,

Bye for now!
